Margaret smiled. She sat with her on the grass, under tree's shadow "Nice to meet you, Gwen. I..I was not saying that you are ill. But you are surely tired. I never saw you at court. Are you a lady in waiting?" She wondered who this girl was

I shifted a little, I was neither ill nor tired - how presumptuous. This woman was clearly naive through privilege - I wish from time to time I could be like that...

I smiled at her,"Heavens no. I'm a nurse is all. Although I assume you must be."

Margaret giggled. She shook a head "A nurse? Oh no..I am not. I am a lady in waiting. But my Mistress is not at court in these days. So I am taking care of her children.." She answered noticing that she looked annoyed. But she tried to be kind "Are you here..with your family?"

I sighed - definitely privileged,"That is what I meant. Every woman here seems to be a lady in waiting."

I tilted my head. The lady she waits upon does not look after her own children, curious...although I am not well versed with the customs of the wealthy.

I glanced to her and smiled,"No, my family are at home."

Margaret nodded "I understand you. My brother is not at court too. He is at Allington Castle..probably working at some new poem. Oh..he is the poet Thomas Wyatt. You probably heard about him.." She added proudly and she sighed "I also miss my husband. My Mistress is in Italy, and I don't even know when she will be back.."

I shrugged,"I can't say I have heard of him. Although I am sure he is an excellent writer...I mostly read French poetry you see, or Swedish if I have the time."

I paused,"And yet you look after her children? Do you have any by your husband?"

Margaret sighed deeply and she shook her head "No..not yet. We got married few days ago. But..he had to leave court to attend some important matters.." She paused "I lost a child, once. From my ex husband. Oh but..it's a long story. Tell me about you, Gwen: are you married?" She asked trying to change topic

I gave her a downcast cast look,"I'm very sorry but there is hope of happiness with your new husband. I'm sure you'll be very happy."

I then allowed myself to smile,"Thank Gods no! No, I'm unattached."

Margaret noticed she used plural talking about God. She smiled weakly "Thank you. I am sure that the Lord will send you the right man, Gwen. Just don't lose hope.."

I rolled my eyes and snorted jokingly,"I should hope not - I wouldn't want 'the Lord' to send someone for me. I needn't ever lose hope if I do not have it."

I turned to her and smiled genuinely,"In any case...I'm rather content alone...and I doubt I'd find anyone here."

Margaret smiled. Her words left her almost speechless "Oh..I am surprised to hear that. You look very pretty, and you could build a family, one day. I..I wanted to be alone too, after my first marriage. I didn't trust in men anymore. Until I met my new husband.." She took a breath "No one is born to be alone, Gwen.."

I smiled and shrugged,"I'm not afraid of getting hurt but I don't need to get married in order to end being alone. I'm not lonely."

I looked to her and chuckled,"I'm clearly not as...unstained as you, but I don't necessarily believe that I must get married to be happy or have children. I just have not met anyone I would want to be with for a lifetime."

Margaret shrugged "Oh I am not unstained as you think. I did many mistakes. But I still believe in virtue and in true love. When you'll find it, you'll understand immediately.." She wondered if her marriage with Anthony could really last for lifetime

I chuckled,"I've loved and been loved...but it's always seemed...I don't know peculiar that two people could remain together forever. I just think I'm easily bored."

I glanced to her,"I think I was just brought up differently to most..."

Margaret smiled again. This girl was very particular. But she didn't get her last words "What do you mean?"

I turned to her - I noticed the look she gave me, she thinks me strange. Given Thomas' reaction I was unsure if I should be so honest,"I come from Sweden and things are very different there. We have different ways and traditions...so they are often thought of as wrong in England."

Margaret frowned, but she still hold her smile "Sweden? Oh..I never met somene coming from North. But I guess it's a very fascinating country. What kind of..traditions you have there?" She asked curiously

I laughed and blurted out,"I'm pagan and I suppose that's a tradition."

She didn't seem very open minded- God fearing and a good catholic, entirely the opposite of me. It is strange how the English people very - some are so very fearful and superstitious (and I fear she is one of those) and others are so curious and kind...

Margaret smiled disappeared slowly and she frowned again "Pagan? Do you mean..that you believe in gods?" She said a little confused. As good catholic, she always considered pagans as heretics

"Amongst other things but put simply yes,"I hoped she wasn't one of those catholics who think my kind should be burned,"We aren't as bad as your lot make out, you know."

Margaret shook her head "Oh no..I am not thinking bad things about you. I am just..curious. And I never met a pagan before. Are you used to do..human sacrifices or things like this?" She asked a bit hesitantly, hoping she wasn't thinking she was silly or unlearned

I leaned close and whispered theatrically,"Only on full moons."

I then looked at her and saw her shocked face. I laughed,"No! No, nothing like that at all. I suppose in the third century a couple of pagans would but it's not really like that. It seems like a perfectly logical explanation for the world...to me."

"It is nothing like that - it's rather close to no religion at all but I don't think I could conform to be a catholic,"I replied, smiling genuinely.
