Pope Paul made his way to his private audience room, stopping many times for people who were grabbing his hands and begged for his blessing, some of them crying so he took his time to comfort them before entering the room.
Once inside he saw Cardinal Campeggio, waiting for him so he quickened his pace to greet him.

Cardinal Campeggio! Please, sit down, I know you suffer from gout.

He gestured to a chair with cushions at the table.

And I can hardly stand on my feet myself.

Campeggio sat in front of the Pope and he looked at him

"We have received two new letters from the King of England. About his Great Matter.. "

"First one is from King himself.. He invites you to court to make a final decision on his name and for the sake peace in England."

He started to read the letter

"He uses a salmon temperate language of Holiness, complaining that never was there any prince handled by a Pope -as Your Holiness has treated us-"

He nodded seriously, droopy but not surprised.
He refers to my predecessor. And to be honest, somewhere he is right, Clemens was a terrible laggard.

Even though it is regrettable that some people dug him up after his death and stabbed him on the streets, I can understand their feelings. He was never popular.

He crossed himself and whispered a short prayer for the former pope.

And the second letter?

He sighed and smiled a little, ironically.
Of course, we need to make a decision soon. While others have their armies and swords, we only have words.... so we need to use them wisely.

He looked at Campeggio and asked him.
So, what about this girl, this putain, the king's whore?

Anne Boleyn, yes.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

He sighed and bited his lips, deep in thoughts.

Why does no one just get rid of her? he asked himself aloud.

Long time after Campeggio had gone, he still sat at his desk, puzzled.
The tone, used in the letters from king Henry grew more and more agressive, it was time to act.

He called his servant and dictated him a letter to send to Henry, warning him not to act before a decision was made. Once sealed with the Papal seal, he sent the servant away and took his quill to write another letter in his own hand, the words discretely formed but clear to the recipient.

He made a gesture and a man came forward from the shades, his face hidden under his cowl. The man kneeled and he blessed him, handing him the letter.

Make sure you deliver this letter yourself, don't lose sight of it on your way.
He held his breath untill the man left, then sighed deeply and left the room himself.
