Pope Paul was sitting on his throne. His weakly audience was going to start. The Room was crowded. There were people of Rome, but also foreign visitors. He waited for the Room to be silent before starting his speech

As soon as the secret wedding was over William had boarded onto a ship to deliver the news personally to Campeggio. That Henry Tudor had now married his whore, Anne Boleyn in a secret ceremony with only a few guests. William was the eyes and ears of the English court a spy if you like. As far as William was concerned his work in England was finally over and he would ask Campeggio  if he could now live in Rome.

Pope Paul looked at the crowd. As they were silent, he started his solemn speech

"As successor of St. Peter, I severely condemn the King of England's separation from Katherine of Aragon, and King's subsequent secret marriage, that I declare null and invalid.."

"About the matter of the annulment of His Majesty's marriage, it may be resolved by the Curia only, which has not taken a decision, yet.."

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"I grant to the King, by the end of September, to rejoin to his legitimate wife, or he'll pay with the penalty of excommunication. That is with the separation from the Holy Church, from the Sacrament of Communion and from Our Lord Himself.."

Then he blessed the people who were listening him with the sign of the cross and he stood up slowly from his throne

"Thank you, Excellencies. Now you may go spreading my message everywhere.."

With his head bowed down Brereton approached the pope kneeling before him whilst Campeggio made the introductions.

Pope Paul looked at the man knelt before him. Cardinal Campeggio introduced the young man to him

"Holy Father, this is the young englishman I talked you about. He is the bearer of informations about english court. Master William Brereton.."

Then he smiled weakly and grabbed his arms, helping him to stand up

"My son..We're grateful to you for bringing us news about such awful events, and for what you have done to avoid them.."

"I tried to rid you of her, unfortunately, Holy father, I failed."

William admitted casting his head and eye's to look down at the ground letting his hand slip away from the Holy Father.

Pope Paul looked at him with a mysterious and slight smile on his face

Who can tell it, my son? God acts in very mysterious ways. Cardinal Campeggio told me that you would like to remain in Rome, and not coming back to England. Is that true?

"Yes Holy Father"

William sighed taking a deep breath. All his efforts thus far had not gone so well..

"I would rather remain with the faithful flock"

Pope Paul wrapped an arm around his shoulder and took few steps with him

Recently, Master Brereton, I have etablished a new special order of monks. They are called "Militantes Ecclesiae", Christ's soldiers!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

He continued to explain, still holding fatherly his arm

The Jesuits, so they are called, like soldiers, will go where others don't dare to, braving great dangers with courage, in order to defend the cause of the Catholic faith, and to bring God's word to pagans and to heretics..

Then he looked into his eyes

I already see your passion for this cause. So I ask you..to wed the Order. Join the crusade against heresy, and come back to England even at the cost of your martyrdom..

William most definitely wasn't a monk, he had had a wife and children. Hearing what needed to be done William kissed his feet without uttering a word. He was in way too far to even try to back out now in fact how he ever came to be involved is still all a blur to him.
