Dearest niece,
I smiled so happily when I received your letter, and I haven't smiled in weeks. Thank you for being the godsent light for me. I also send my prayers to you my dear.
You asked about this sadness after childbirth. I experienced it during a few of my own. I think it's because when the child is still inside you, you are one, and everyone loves you both as one. When the child is born, you become two separate entities. You become less loved while the child takes up all the love you would have shared. It is common in women, though we hate to admit it. Just pray to God to take away your fears and your pain.
Thank you for enduring with me, for staying on my side while everyone else has turned against me. May God bless and heal you, dear Isabella.
The Queen of Castile,
Joanna

"My dear Aunt,
I shall never turn against you and you will always have me if men could go through what us women endure during childbirth we would be put on petal stalls and given more respect and love! Love is what I crave for the most at this moment in time.
I am still enduring pain mainly in my heart. My duties as a Princess to Portugal are on hold I have to stay in bed to heal even though I long to see you for piece of mind. How are your lodgings are they clean do you have sufficient enough drinking water. I hope you have servants that are loyal to you and that the doctors are not putting you through hell with constant treatment.
Your most loyal subject,
HRH Isabella of Portugal."

Dearest niece,
You will soon find that this is a man's world, and the women inhabiting it are of little consequence when we are not having children or used for some advantageous purpose. I do not say this to alarm you, only to inform you that a woman's whole life is her fight, and you must always be the better fighter. Always remember that you are beloved of me, dear niece, and always beloved of God.
My lodgings are clean, as is the water they give me. The food is not bad as well. The only complaint I have is boredom, and so my memories serve as a pastime. What servants I do have are very loyal to me, they are my link to the outside world and I hope they are never taken from me.
Bellita, I pray you are healed in heart, body and spirit. You should not have to know the same loneliness as me...
Love always,
Joanna, Queen of Castile.

"My dear Aunt,
I fear now that I do know the same loneliness as you are facing I am bed ridden whilst outside the birds are chirping and the daylight is simply beautiful.
One of your ladies in waiting Sienna I think her name tried to fight my cause with the King it was very amusing please thank her for her kindness and worry but apart from Princess Valerie trying to find a way to be rid of me I know that Richard still loves me as I do him.
Ambassador Inigo Mendoza gives you his support and can't quite believe that Emperor Charles has gone so low as to lock you away. You are an honourable Queen in the hearts of people in Spain and Lisbon and shall remain so.
I hope you are allowed the window shutters open to allow the air in a glimpse of sunshine can cheer the spirits.
With love always
Isabella."

Dearest niece Bellita,
As long as you have God you are never truly alone, but I can relate to the emptiness you feel. It is like drowning, isn't it? You have to fight to stay afloat, even when the tide is against you.
I have always liked Sienna for that reason: she takes up for others when the odds are against them. She doesn't give up either. That is a wonderful trait in a woman. I am so happy to hear that she is on your side. As for this Princess Valerie, mind her not. She will come to ruin in her own way.
I'm so happy to have Ambassador Mendoza's support! If you speak to him, please ask what may be done to help me. The sooner I can leave, the sooner I can come to you and come to your aid.
As for the windows, I keep them closed during the days so the dust won't get in. At night there are so many stars it's hard to believe they are so hidden in the daytime. It's a beautiful sight..
Love always, Joanna

"My dear Aunt,
Ambassador Mendoza is going to speak to the emperor about the way he is treating you as it is not just and right he has even become a comfort to me.
The thing is I have been fighting to stay afloat but to no prevail I am still very much hated and now that their is a child involved I fear for his life so when I am healed I shall be returning back to you. I have been such a fool to honestly and truthfully believe that Richard actually did love me but when someone questions it to him he passes it of as a moment of passion. I am sad I am in my own darkness alone with only one person to talk too.
Justice will come about your cause I know it and tonight when the stars are shining I shall look upon them and know that you are here with me and Max.
I am happy to have you in my life my sweet aunt.
your beloved niece Isabella."
