Anne walked over the green grass that lay beside the orange leafed tree, she held a book in one hand and walked over and sat beside the tree, her back to the stream. She sat quietly and listened to the rushing sound of the water and opened her book to the right page and continued on where she left off on the book. She didn't very much like court life, but she knew she would have to get used to it. Breathing in deeply, she sighed. Soon she would have to get a husband, she never much didn't like the sound of that.

Christophe walked around outside, deep in thought as he traversed the garden grounds. He kept his head down as he walked, looking up only to greet fellow courtiers. He did not know what to do with himself on this, the anniversary of his wife's death.

Only four years ago she'd been murdered while he was away, training the other soldiers in the militia. Upon returning he'd had to find his in-laws returning from her wake. She'd been run through with a sword when she would not relinquish her body to be ravaged by intruders. On the day of her funeral, he knew he would never feel anything as terrible as having to put his beloved wife into the ground.

He found a small place by the stream and sat to clear his mind.

I walk about the bank of a lovely pond, looking at the changing colors of the trees, and I cannot help but miss my home...my little Guyot Manor. I picture the little brook that ran beside the wood of the manor, and I remember running to hide, and play with my brothers, and how I used to cry when I could not climb the trees with them.
I cannot help but feel sad, as I remember my nursemaid those days of my childhood, and how she used to sing her Celtic songs.
"Step we gaily on we go, heel for heel and toe for toe, arm in arm and row and row, all for Mairi's wedding," I begin to sing.

I suddenly stop when I come across a man seated near the stream, and I suddenly feel embarassed.

"Pardon me," I mutter, "I can leave if you wish," I begin to leave.

Christophe heard the music before he saw its source; he'd thought he only imagined it. He stood when he saw the young lady. "You don't have to leave," he said in a gentle voice. "Please stay if you wish, your presence isn't a bother to me." He smiled at her. his mind returning to the present day; late summer on the bank of a river and a young maid come out of the forest like a wood sprite.

"Alright," I nod and smile. I turn around as not to bother him and stand beside the trees, standing upon my tiptoes to reach the bright orange and yellow leaves, turning with the coming of the fall. I hold for a moment, stretching and suddenly laugh, nervously.
"Pardon, monsieur," I smile and turn to the gentleman, "could I trouble you for a moment?" I point to the leaves, "I fear I am too small to pick these leaves."

He chuckled as he watched the young lady trying to reach for the leaves. He got up quickly to help her. "If I may," he said before taking gentle hold of her waist and lifting her up to reach for her leaves. She was thin and also very light. "I can hold you up as long as you need, mademoiselle," he chuckled.

I could not help but giggle as he took hold of my waist and I am certain I squirmed a bit as I found myself tickled. "Thank you so very much, monsieur," I laugh. I cannot help but remember the days of my childhood when my eldest brother, Pierpont, would pick me up to reach for the apples in the orchard next to our manor, and how he would always jest that I was far too small to ever be able to reach any tree.
Yet I reached as far I could and began to pick the yellow, red and orange leaves of the trees that at first seemed so very high.
I give another giggle, "thank you, monsieur, I think I have all I need."

When she is finished I set her down again as gently as I lifted her. "I'm glad I could be of help," I say with a smile. "You must be an admirer of nature. But of course, allow me to introduce myself: je m'appelle Christophe Sinclair. I'm curious, what do you plan to do with these leaves?"

I smile and spread the fabric of my gown, curtseying, "my name is Coralie, monsieur Sinclair," I beam. I give a laugh and look at the leaves in my grasp, "I am."
I blush a little, embarassed, “his majesty has given me permission to send for my marionettes, yet I have also asked my brother to make me another.”
I look at the bright red and yellow leaves, “she will be a fairy queen…her crown will be made of leaves,” I blush. “I must sound a bit mad to you,” I laugh.

"Marionettes? So you perform puppetry? I've not seen anything of the sort. You must be very creative." He smiled at her enthusiasm about the dolls. She reminded him so much of his young niece, whom he hadn't seen in years. "No, mademoiselle, I do not think you are mad. Only.. cheerful and obviously very excited about your hobby." He replied, chuckling.

I give a laugh, "I like to think I am creative...and I am glad you think me not mad."I turn to face him and suddenly my eyes go wide.
“Are you a soldier?” I frown slightly. “My papa was a soldier a while ago, but he still sits and walks the same,” I smile, “you walk erect, and your head is tall and shoulders back,” I nod. I give a laugh, “I am a bit small, yet you lifted me so very easily, and you introduced yourself very kindly.”

He smiled at Coralie. "Yes, mademoiselle, I am a soldier. I have trained almost all my life, from the time I was a young boy and found my passion in fighting and strategy. Who is your father? Perhaps I have known him or served in the same regiment." He chuckled when she complimented him on his stature, strength and manners. "I have not suffered many injuries that have incapacitated me. I've many scars from close combat. I have to always stay fit for the next training session or battle I go into, and you're a slight little thing, it is nothing to lift you. As for manners, I try always to be a gentleman, and to help those who need it."

I smile and look down, "my papa was an Admiral, I'm afraid."

My eyes grow wide, "it is good you are well," I smile, "I cannot imagine such combat that should harm me," I laugh, "I could not find such bravery." I nod, again, "yes, it is very good you are not injured," my smile fades a little, "my papa's leg was injured in a naval battle...he often has to walk with a cane when it hurts too much."

My eyes grow wide, again, "are you always ready for battle?" I blink, "I should think I was terrified," I laugh.

I look at the leaves in my hand, "and I am glad you are a gentleman," I frown slightly, "I am glad to have found gentlemen here in my short time at court." I give a laugh, "my mother warned me very much that such gentlmen could not be found at court...yet I am glad to be able to prove her to be mistaken," I giggle, placing my hand over my lips.

"I see.. your father served in the navy then." Christophe nodded. "Any such service that provides protection to the realm and to our king, and that brings glory to France, is very honorable." He frowned. "I'm sorry your father suffered an injury, but any soldier is proud to do so for his country." He nodded when asked if he was always prepared for battle. "Yes, and battle is not just in war between two dominions. if someone were to attack me when I was on my own I must be ready to counter-attack. Preparedness is key." Noticing she looked frightened he chuckled reassuringly. "It's all right, I daresay we are safe here even out in the forest. And I am glad to be the first gentleman you have found.. I hope that does not mean there are many ruffians at court?" he said teasingly.

I smile, "yes, my papa did love those days in the Navy...he used to tell me stories of watching the sunset over nothing but the sea, and all the islands they would often visit...and he would bring things for my mother." I laugh, "and he was so very proud of serving."

I laugh again, and look down at the dress I wear, "I am so very small...I think I would be easily overpowered." "Yet I am glad I can feel safe here...it is so beautiful to see the colors and hear the water, it reminds me of home," I smile.

"Well...the first gentleman I met was his majesty," I blush a little, "and I am glad you are one, for it shows me there are certainly others."

I frown a little, "you say you were trained in combat?" I smile, "did you ever hear of a young man named Pierpont Guyot?...he is my brother."

"I have not been much at sea nor have I served in the royal navy, but it sounds as though your father was born for his station in the navy, a born sailor. And I remember when I used to bring things home for my wife and younger sisters." He smiled fondly remembering their expectant faces when he'd return from a long journey. He never let himself think the gifts he bestowed were not as welcomed as Christophe's own returned presence.

"Yes, this place is very calm, very sacred. I doubt any bad thing could happen here. But if it did, know that I would protect you." He smiled, taking another mental note of his daggers, one kept in his boot and the other in the holster at his side.

"You're right, His Majesty is a true gentleman. He has a love of learning, and a love of fine things. I can relate more to the former. Education is one thing that cannot be taken from someone."

He nodded. "Yes, I was trained early on by my father but I had several instructors as I grew up. Perhaps you could describe your brother to me? I'm not very good with names," he admitted with a little laugh.

Coralie laughed, "you must be a very good husband and brother."

Coralie looked about the forest around her, noting the changing colors and the dark water that moved beside the bank the two stood. She gave a smile.

"Yes, it certainly is sacred." She looked down at the leaves in her hand, "I am certain this place shall give me inspiration for my stories and lyrics." Coralie looked up and smiled with him, "thank you, good sir, that is so very kind of you to offer your protection."

Coralie turned her head at the mention of the king, not wanting the gentleman to catch her blushing. "Did you also know the former king?" she smiled.

"That is most impressive sir," my eyes grow wide, "I would love to ask you somethings, as I am working on a ballad about a knight, and I could use your advise," she smiled.

Coralie laughed, "well, he looks a little like me, and has my eyes...yet he has long dark blond hair," she gave another laugh, placing a hand at her mouth, "unfortunately, he is a bit of a rogue, as my brother Chevalier says, and I am certain if you knew him, you were either good friends, or enemies," she laughed.

He gave a half-moon smile. "I hope I was good to my family. I don't know. My wife died, and I haven't spoken to my sister in many years."

"I grew up in a house near a stream just like this one. My father taught me to fish, and we hunted in the nearby woods. Sometimes I would go out on my own just to be alone. It sounds silly but I never felt sad when I was in the woods. I always felt someone was watching over me. God, perhaps." he chuckled.

"I knew King Louis at the very end of his life, not long after he married that English princess. I suppose you were too young to have met him? I think King Francis has changed many things about court, he has scholars, artists, poets and astronomers to visit here and always keeps everyone entertained."

He smiled when Coralie asked if he'd help her. "I'd be honored to. I write a little verse now and then, when the moment strikes. I may know some things about a knight."

He searched his memory of a face to go with the name, but none came up. "I'm sorry, I have not met him. Perhaps I may be lucky enough to be introduced to him someday."

Coralie's eyes grew wide, "Oh, I am so sorry monseiur," she shook her head. "I cannot imagine such a loss."

Coralie gave a smile, "yes, I think the woods bring out much of that in all of us," she looked up to the sky and the high heavens, "I think we are children of nature at heart," she smiled.

"Yes," Coralie giggled, "I must have been very small." "I like this court," she smiled, "there is art and music and beauty everywhere."

Her eyes grew wide, again, "you write poetry?" she gasped, "oh, monsieur I think it funny that we should find each other here in the woods and find we are both artists."

Coralie smiled, "I am certain you two would get along."

He shook his head and tried to give a smile. "Eventually you get used to losses. It may hurt, but you learn to treasure everything else you are given."

He smiled tenderly at her words. "That is something my younger sister would say, sometimes she would find me out in the woods when I was still young, and when our mother was upset with her she would come out and ask if we could live in the forest, just us, like two children in a fairy tale." He laughed at the memory.

"This is the best court to be, and I have been to every court in the Christian lands. Do you think someday you would like to travel, mademoiselle?"

He chuckled. "I write only a little, I wouldn't call myself an artist or a poet. But if that is what you wish to make of me I have no objection." He smiled again.

"Pierpont Guyot.. he sounds as someone I'd get along with from your description."
He didn't want to admit he hadn't may friends, he was the solitary type, but she seemed very eager for them to be friends.

Coralie nodded solemnly, "I know what you mean...I lost someone when I was a little girl, but it does not compare to your loss," Coralie gave a faint smile.

Coralie laughed, "oh, I often wonder such things," she smiled. "I think I should like to be a fairy or nymph," she shook her head, "yet I know such things are silly."

Her eyes grew wide, "Oh, Monsieur Sinclair, I know I should love to travel!!" She clasped her hands together, "my papa travels all over, to Italy and England and Spain...Oh, I want to go there as well, and I want to go further than anyone has ever gone before," she smiled. "I want to find new and odd lands and people, and I want to see the treasures they have to offer."

Coralie laughed, "oh, but sir, if you write, you certainly write more than any other, and it shows you are already more artistic than most," she smiled.

She giggled, "I am certain you two would have much to talk about."

He frowned. "Whom did you lose, mademoiselle? If it is not too painful a subject," he added.

"I don't think those thoughts are silly, every girl wants to be a fairy or sprite or nymph. You have a broad imagination, and that is something that many people will carry with them throughout their whole lives."

"I'm sure you would enjoy traveling, there are many undiscovered lands but they are dangerous. Uncultivated and uncultured. But there are very beautiful places in Europe. Spain is hot, England is rainy, and Italy has every enjoyable thing you can imagine.."

He smiled as she praised his hobby. "I would not think of myself as artistic.."

Coralie looked down at the leaves in her hand, blinking away any tears that may try to fall out. "...when I was little, I found my-...my nursemaid, Fionnula, dead with the sweat," she spoke slowly. "She was always my favorite nursemaid, and always the nicest to me...I miss her, and none others have been as kind as she was."

Coralie gave a faint smile, "thank you monsieur, I hope I can be a good artist from it."

She gave a laugh, "perhaps you could accompany me to such travels for protection," she jested. "I am certain you would be an amiable adventurer."

Coralie smiled at him, "I believe, that so long as you make or write beautiful things that have been given to you by God...you are an artist," her eyes shined as she looked him in the eye.

"Might I ask, Monsieur Sinclair," she looked up to him, "what is it that brought you to the wood this day?"

"I'm sorry to hear of your nursemaid's passing. That is a terrible thing for a child to have to witness. I'm sure wherever she is she is watching over you," Christophe reassured her.

"Of course I would say I am the best choice to protect you on your travels, but in my area of expertise I admit I am a little conceited: I am usually the best choice to keep people from harm."

He shrugged. "Sometimes I am inspired to write words and sometimes people think those words sound nice together. I suppose that is poetry though I doubt I could rival a real poet. When I am good at something I aim to be the best and remain unsurpassed," he said nonchalantly.

The corners of his mouth drew down when she asked why he was in the woods. "I needed some time to think. Today is an anniversary of a terrible thing that happened." His voice was ice and he refused to say more, turning to stone.
