He led the king to the study, thinking it an appropriate place to have a confidential talk. He bade Francois to sit, and poured white wine into a goblet. "This is one of my wife's favorites. I hope you enjoy it as well." He poured himself a glass and sat down. "Forgive my boldness but I think you have something to say that you did not want said in front of the ladies.."

I take a deep drink. The wine is hearty and rich with flavor. I set my goblet down and sit back, folding my hands upon my lap. "Merci Monsieur, that was délicieux indeed... Monsieur Sinclair... forgive me for not telling the truth earlier... when I learned of your marriage to La Baronne, I had my staff do a great deal of research on you-merely to know to whom it is a noble daughter of France is to wed...just a precaution vous comprenez?... naturally I wished for La Baronne not to know this." I say holding my hand out in a gesture of good will.
"I know of your military service Monsieur, particularly in Italy in the last war... I am to say the least, quite impressed."

I heretofore offer you Monsieur Sinclair, a formal commission to Capitaine in les forces côtières royaux de l'armée française ... specifically the command of the fortress on Îles du Frioul... it's Island defenses, naval guns and garrison of one hundred and seventy-five men at arms and support staff... I choose you Monsieur, for your already noted bravery, loyalty and well... as a belated wedding gift to yourself and La Baronne... do you accept this charge Monsieur?"

I know you shall Monsieur... as your home is here in Marseilles and the Island protects it, I know that in the event of any hostilities you shall fight like a lion to defend it... and as it is not far from your home, you shall have plenty of time to spend with your new family when on leave... La Baronne and the child may even accompany you and take up apartment there as les chambres are quite luxurious... indeed Claude and I have our own suites there as well... so, do you have any questions Monsieur, or rather, Le Capitain Sinclair?... Anything?"

I reach for the Goblet, certain Monsieur Sinclair is well pleased.

One of Angelique's servants runs into the study where the King and Christophe are speaking. Nearly out of breath, she speaks hurriedly:
Your Majesty...My Lord.... She curtsies then continues. My Lady Baroness has gone into labor and her water has just broken. It shouldn't be too much longer until the child is here. She hears Angelique scream, If you will excuse me. She turns and leaves.
