| 28th April 1533 "To HRH James V of Scotland, I thank you for welcoming me into your kingdom you were a very gracious host. Not many people have so much tolerance for us Spanish. Alas, all my years in Bavaria have softened my accent. It saddens me a little that we when meeting did not get on as much as I thought we would your grace. It would have been splendid to meet the queen your wife people throughout Scotland speak about her which such high regard. My Hapsburg family is rather torn apart at the moment all due to one lady I wouldn't be surprised if a war with Spain and Italy arose. I now shall set sail to see my Grandmother Joanna of Castille, who shares the same fate as her sister in England Katherine of Aragon. None of this I realize shall be of no interest to you and why should it it's not your battle. I do have a question to ask if your majesty allows it. That if all wars break out due to a person who wishes to seek out my homeland for their own greed and not caring about the dynasty. That I might seek refuge in Scotland...
Again, I do not wish to involve you in matters that aren't your own. I am just scared for my family.
Humbly,
Maria of Austria. Archduchess of Austria. " | |

| Your Grace, Maria,
I am gratified that you enjoyed your time in our kingdom, especially as your visit was during a particularly cold spell - not many would travel to our land during the winter. Your endurance, I believe, only speaks in favour of your character.
As for the matters you discuss, I believe it unwise to convey any promise by ink on parchment. Yet I will say: Scotland has always welcomed those who visit with benign intentions and a benevolent heart; it’s people and I, shall always extend the hand of friendship to peaceful travellers.
I wish you luck during your times of struggle and insecurity. Perhaps you shall meet my wife, Her Majesty the Queen, if you visit our shores again.
Truly,
James Stewart
