Thomas listen to her attentively in hearing her talking about a man, as she talk about him.

Francis Bryan ... I know him only of view. He seem rather mysterious to me, notably about his precise work for the king, that seem important and his personnality is difficult to make out.

A bit worried for her since it's about a man, he ask her.

A rose ?, it's kind to him indeed and I think it's mean that you please to him ... do he behave respectfully to you, like a true gentleman ?

Margaret turned her head to him and nodded quickly "Oh yes, Thomas. He is a true gentleman and he never said...nothing bold to me. We just had a little argue. But I think he could be a good friend to me. I need friends in court..." She sighed and smiled sweetly at him

Thomas smile, reassured and pleased by her answer.

Good, you will need more time for know him better but it's seem that he seem to be a true gentleman indeed. Maybe he will participate to the joust also, I could take advantage of this occasion for get acquainted with him at my turn.

His face take a intrigued air and he frown slighty.

You do have argue with him ?! may I know for which reason ?

He smile again and nodd.

Indeed you do need friends and it's would be nice if you and him become good friends.

Margaret shrugged a bit "Oh...nothing serious, really. The rose's thorn wounded my finger, so he gave me his handkerchief. The day after, I went in his study room to give him his handkerchief back. But he looked surprised...and said that I don't have giving nothing to him, cause it was just a gesture of kindness. But the truth is...that he misundestood completely my words, Thomas! Maybe he thought I wanted giving him something else..." She explained. Then she rolled her eyes and sighed

He listen to his sister with attention, surprised by the man's reaction, he reflect, trying to analizate the reasons of it, then answer.

It's a bit weird indeed, it's maybe was only a misunderstanding because he don't expected that you would return him his handkerchief, but it's also possible that he have think that you wanted something else from him or maybe wish for something of more happen between you and him ... anyway I find his reaction weird too, I don't either know what to think of it.

He look at her, hesitating, feeling a bit embarrassed, then ask her.

Tell me, do you feel anything of more than friendship for him ?, honestly.

Margaret blushed suddenly and shook her head after Thomas's question "Oh no...I hardly know him, Thomas! I admit he is rather handsome...yes. But I'm interested in his friendship only. I think we could be...good friends, after all. He apologized for his reaction..." She said as calmly as she could, feeling her heart beating faster inside her

Thomas nodd after her words.

Good, you may have find a new good friend in him and in showing him that there wasn't ambiguity in your gesture when you have return him his handkerchief, you have etablish the limitations of friendship and I am pleased to learn that he have apologize, it's proove that he may a good frien for you.

He smile, looking at her with soft eyes.

You know, I am proud of you because I feel that you have much gain maturity, confidence, carefulness and wiseness since your arrival at court and I feel that I can't rely on you for protect yourself and your interest, of course, as your brother I am still here for protect you, but it's reassure me for your future.

Well, you succed in ! you aren't anymore the naive teenager that you was at your arrival here but have blossom in a true lady ! physically of course but also in your maturity and so of course I am rpoud of you.

He chucke after she pat his arms, taking her hand while reflecting.

I don't know, he hadn't tell me, I guess that all his male friends like me and other men of his court are invitated to join us ... I will see ! I hope that it wil lbe nice anyway ... even I have not much enthousiast because I don't like the idea to kill animals for the pleasure, but it's the tradition and his majesty love it and, as one of his closer friends, I can't refuse to join it.

Margaret giggled "I know. Our father tried to bring you with him for hunting when we were at Allington, but you always refused to join him. But you're a King's man, now. The most popular poet in the court...And what about your private life, Thomas? Is there a lady in your life? You need a wife, and Annie and Tommy need a mother..." Thomas nodd.

Indeed as king's man, I have some obligations and I have to accepting his invitations, as much as I can ... so I will go this time and see ... but if it's like I imagine it is, I will not participate to another one, trust me.
He feel a bit incomfortable at her question as he don't like to talk about his private life, especially with his sister, thinking that if she did know about it fully, she would be shocked since he spend most of his time to bed women he hardly know and change of mistresses all the time and that he isn't really a model of virtue for her.

I know that they do need a mother and I would like them for have one and me a wife again, but you know that my first marriage has been a pure disaster and ... uh ... in fact the matter is that there is several women in my life, but none with whom it's seem to can become any serious, it never last ...

Margaret looked curiously at him and smiled "Do you mean...that you have mistresses, Thomas? I'm surprised. You never talked me about that, brother. And...how many women do you have?" She asked astonished, knowing that he always told her to protect her virtue. And now he was acting like men he ordered her to stay away from...

Thomas, embarrassed, hesitate about what to answer, then decide to tell the true seen he yet told about the main thing.

Well, I am very discreet about my private, I don't much like to talk about it ... in fact, since my teenage, aside while my marriage, I always had many mistresses.

He sigh, reflecting.

I couldn't even tell precisely ... I have many girls just for a few days or even only for a moment, or night ... and for the others, it's change constantly as I break with one and encounter a new one all the time, but I can tell that currently, I have got three mistresses and four flirts, and there is also two others ladies whom I see only sometimes to times, but with whom I am since a long time.

Margaret was listening him with shocked eyes. She knew her brother was not chaste. But she didn't imagined he had so many mistresses. She tried to smile "Ah...I see. That's why sometimes I can't find you around court. I thought...I thought you were closed in your room, working at something new. But, instead of being at your desk...you were in your bed!" She took a deep breath, before adding "I know it's not my business, Thomas. But you think that you act like that just because you're a man, right? What if I did the same thing?" She asked, feeling a bit angry

Thomas can see that his sister is socked by his revelation.

Well, I do indeed spend much time at work ... but also much time with women, it's true ... but since I remain discreet, it isn't much knowed, fortunately.

His eyes widen up at his sister words in shock and slight anger.

If you did the same thing ?! you would lost all your chances of making a good marriage, as long as your innocence and your reputation, it's the fate of women who act like me, I know that it's may seem injust but it's how the things are.

He sigh, thinking to his shallow love life, feeling invaded by sadness and melancolia.

And if you really want to know, if I do that it's because I am single and lonely, do love women and look for some love and release, and even if there isn't real love in it, it's better bring me some ephemerous joy and even sometimes, the illusion to be loved. It isn't virtuous way of life, I hope to can remarry some day and lead a more virtuous life, but in the meanwhile, it's how my life is.

Margaret took a deep breath. She nodded slowly and put an hand on his shoulder "I know that you feel alone, Thomas. But this is not the right way to fight lonely. Think about your children. It's not a good exemple for them. Sometimes I feel alone too. But I never threw myself in someone's arms for that..." She said with calm voice, looking at his eyes

My children don't know anything about it, fortunately, I am very discreet. I know that it's a sin, but I just can"t do otherwise, as long as I will not have find a suitable wife for me.

He smile sllighty.

I am glad of it, you are wiser than me and I don't want you for ever be in the same situation as I am being.

He nodd and smile, rubbing her shoulder.

Indeed, it's getting late, I need some rest too.

He put both of his hand on her cheeks and kiss her forehead.

Once Thomas left, Margaret finished to brush her hair. Then she crossed and said silently her prayers. She crossed again, reached her bed and lied on it. It was a bit cold, and she covered herself with a warm blanket and hugged her pillow. After few minutes, she fell asleep deeply
